Fellows Faves: Embracing Nature

12 Plus works across a dozen high schools in both Philadelphia and Camden. When we partner with a new school, we take time to carefully learn about each school’s needs and community.

Naturally, each partner we work with is very different and offers unique opportunities for their students. Hear how Victoria Todd is able to embrace nature while working in a bustling building.

Meet Victoria:

Victoria is a fellow at Camden High Campus. She has learned a lot through 1 on 1 advising, doing class presentations and having teacher meetings. She has loved getting to know South Jersey after moving to the area from Houston, Texas. In her free time, she loves to go hiking at Wissahickon with her dog and read a good book.

Fellows Favorites: Nature on Campus

One of my favorite things about my 12 Plus site is the way they utilize nature. Camden High Campus has so much access to nature, which is something you wouldn’t expect in an urban area. There is greenery surrounding the campus as well as courtyards inside. That easy access to fresh air and natural sunlight is definitely something I utilize and have cherished from day 1. In my free time, I use hiking and walks as my usual forms of exercise and relaxation, so communing with nature is a big part of my life. These are spaces where I can feel the sun on my face and unplug.

At the beginning of the school year, having the option to eat my lunch outside brought me an immediate sense of peace. Bonding with the other Camden Fellows felt easier in the courtyards because we had a space outside of the Plus Center to socialize. We talked about our previous jobs, moving to the city, and our families. Students have limited access to the courtyards, so when I need a break from the excitement of high school, the courtyards are always there.

During the fall semester, the garden club at Big Picture Learning Academy (BPLA) added flower beds and benches to one of the school entrances creating a tranquil area for students and staff alike to hang out before and after school. It is sweet sitting in such a nice place knowing a dedicated staff member, I work with each week, Ms. Martin and her students made it possible. Her students get to leave a legacy behind, adding to the school footprint for students and staff to enjoy for years to come.

Another BPLA staff member, Mr. Ivone is known for his dedication to nature, especially his love of birds. The bird feeder outside his classroom is very often frequented by a variety of birds. It is a great teaching tool letting kids learn about local species, foster a love for bird watching, and gain an appreciation for our ecosystem. It's inspiring to see teachers share their hobbies and interests with students, proving just how contagious it can be to share your genuine interest in the world with those around you.

Across the street from the school, the city bus drops me off in front of a large city park. Lots of students hang out there to enjoy the park equipment and admire the artistic statues. Hanging out on the swings and watching community members exercise in nature makes waiting for the bus a touch nicer.

Even the design of the school with its huge almost floor to ceiling windows placed throughout the campus gives everyone picturesque views of the city and neighborhood adding to the calming presence nature brings to my days here. Taking in the awe of trees that changed to vibrant hues of orange and yellow in the fall and watching the rain fall or fog clear between classes are just a few memories I will cherish forever.

All of these things together add to my love of Camden High Campus making me so proud and grateful for being placed at this 12 Plus site.
